Labrador Retriever Dog Breed

Common Name: Labrador Retriever, Labrador, Lab

Country of Origin: Newfoundland (Canada)

History: The Labrador Retriever dog breed was bred as a hunter and water retriever. The Labrador was developed from St. Johns Newfoundlands and other gun dog breeds in the early nineteenth century.

The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the United States according to AKC registration records. The Labrador is still used for hunting today, especially duck and other types of bird hunting.

The Labrador Retriever is also used for drug dogs, military dogs, search and rescue and they also work with the blind as service dogs.

Description: The Labrador is a medium to large size dog that tends to be muscular. It has a broad head and a black or brown nose. The eyes are either brown or hazel. The Labrador Retriever has a double coat that is thick and water resistant.

Labrador coat colors are either black, yellow or chocolate.

The height for a Labrador Retriever is 21 to 25 inches.

The weight for a Labrador Retriever is 50 to 90 lbs.

 

Temperament:

The Labrador Retriever is social, friendly and even tempered with almost everyone, including children and other dogs. The Lab loves the water and carrying objects in it's mouth, making hunting game birds and catching Frisbees and other toys perfect for this breed.

Exercise: The Labrador will do well with an active family in a country or suburban environment but the Labrador Retriever has been known to adapt to city life quite well with sufficient exercise.

Life Expectancy: The life expectancy of a Labrador Retriever is 12-17 years or more. It is important to make sure your Labrador puppy is up to date on all it's vaccinations, de-wormings.  

Registries: All registries include the Labrador Retriever. Some of those registries are as follows: AKC, CKC, APR, APRI, UKC and ACA. There are other registries out there but these are the most popular ones.

Overall the Labrador Retriever is the most popular of all dog breeds according to AKC registry records.
